Emergency Procedures

All actions below are for the affected engine unless stated otherwise.

Engine Fire

Engine Fire on Ground

#ItemAction
1EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN LeverFEATHER
2FUEL SwitchCLOSE
3GENERATOR SwitchOFF
4Fire DISCHARGE No. 1 PushbuttonPRESS
5ClockSTART

If the fire indications go out within 30 seconds, continue from step 7.

If the fire indications persist after 30 seconds:

#ItemAction
6Fire DISCHARGE No. 2 PushbuttonPRESS
7Fuel Booster PumpsOFF
8EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN LeverRESET TO NORMAL AFTER ENGINE STOPS
9Power LeverFLIGHT IDLE
10NTS CHECK SwitchHOLD TO ON
11FUNCTION SELECT SwitchHOLD TO CRANK
12EvacuationAS REQUIRED
  • Steps 4 and 6: check that the matching EXT’R EMPTY light comes on after each discharge.
  • Steps 8–10: these unfeather the propeller so the engine can be cranked. If the propeller is already on the start locks, go straight to step 11.
  • Step 11: with the propeller unfeathered, crank the engine until it is cleared of fuel and vapour.

Moving the Power Lever aft of FLIGHT IDLE prevents the propeller from unfeathering.

Engine Fire in Flight

Indicated by the ENGINE FIRE light.

#ItemAction
1EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN LeverFEATHER
2Fuel Booster PumpsOFF
3ClockSTART

If the fire indications go out within 10 seconds, continue from step 6.

If any fire indication persists after 10 seconds:

#ItemAction
4Fire DISCHARGE No. 1 PushbuttonPRESS

If the fire indications go out within 40 seconds, continue from step 6.

If any fire indication persists after 40 seconds:

#ItemAction
5Fire DISCHARGE No. 2 PushbuttonPRESS
6HEATING CONTROL VALVES SwitchCLOSE
7Power Lever (operating engine)AS REQUIRED
8TrimAS REQUIRED
9Ammeter (operating engine)CHECK
10GENERATOR SwitchOFF
11ENGINE INTAKE SwitchOFF
12FUEL SwitchCLOSE
  • Steps 4 and 5: check that the matching EXT’R EMPTY light comes on after each discharge.
  • Step 9: reduce electrical load below 300 A.
  • If the fire is out: land as soon as practicable.
  • If the fire persists: prepare for an immediate emergency landing, and retract the flaps whenever possible.

Avoid windmilling between 18% and 28% RPM, as this may damage the engine. Do not attempt an airstart on an engine shut down because of fire.

Manual Airstart

Do not attempt an airstart if the engine was shut down because of fire or an obvious failure (abnormal instruments or heavy vibration), or if oil temperature is below 4°C.

A manual airstart is recommended when residual EGT is above 200°C, as it gives better control over starting EGT.

Before Start

#ItemAction
1AltitudeBELOW 20,000 FT
2AirspeedABOVE 90 KCAS
3EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN LeverNORMAL
4Power LeverABOUT 1 INCH FORWARD OF FLIGHT IDLE
5RPM LeverSET AS OPERATING ENGINE
6HEATING CONTROL VALVES SwitchCLOSE
7ENGINE INTAKE SwitchOFF
8Fuel Booster PumpsON
9GENERATOR SwitchOFF
10EGT IndicatorCHECK RESIDUAL EGT

If maximum power will be needed immediately after the start, set both RPM Levers to TAKEOFF/LAND.

Airstart

#ItemAction
11SRL & LIMITER CMPTR SwitchOFF
12FUEL SwitchOPEN
13FUNCTION SELECT SwitchHOLD TO UNFEATH UNTIL 60% RPM
14PRIME SwitchAS REQUIRED
15MANUAL IGN PushbuttonPRESS AT REQUIRED RPM AND HOLD
16EGT IndicatorRISING — OBSERVE LIMIT (770°C)
17RPM IndicatorINCREASING TOWARD RPM LEVER SETTING
18MANUAL IGN PushbuttonRELEASE AT 60% RPM
19Oil Pressure IndicatorRISING BY 65% RPM
  • Step 14: prime on before pressing MANUAL IGN, off at light-off, on again to help acceleration, and off when EGT rises quickly, nears the limit, or at 60% RPM.
  • Step 15: press at 10–12% RPM (15% RPM with high residual EGT). The AUTO START warning light should come on.

Do not press MANUAL IGN with the FUEL switch at CLOSE — the engine will flame out when the button is released. If the AUTO START light stays on above 60% RPM, do not carry out any intentional engine shutdown.

Abort the airstart (EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN Lever to FEATHER) if:

  • The propeller does not rotate.
  • RPM does not reach 10% within 10 seconds.
  • EGT is not rising 10 seconds after 10% RPM, or rises rapidly toward or approaches 770°C.
  • Oil pressure does not rise by 65% RPM.
  • RPM stops increasing before reaching the governor setting.
  • There is unusual noise or vibration, or the engine instruments are abnormal.

After Airstart

26HEATING CONTROL VALVES SwitchAS REQUIRED

The OIL PRESSURE warning light should go out.
